4 Durham Place was damaged beyond repair by the fall of an adjacent building and placed under a dangerous structures notice. The difficulty lay in producing a procedure for the delicate demolition and construction of the building that pays homage to, and is reminiscent of its original form.
Using their expert knowledge of dangerous structures, Forcia applied a safety-first approach with its experienced construction team to ensure the safe demolition. A central steel bracing tower was in place to brace the structure while mini piling works were undertaken to secure the basement box. This prevented the occurrence of heave after demolition, and it ensured a safe and predictable redevelopment process.
The project completed a brand new building behind the facade with the exception of a beautifully preserved frontage which was moved 40m down the street to effectively saved and reconstruct around so that shell of house would survive for another life. This approach has breathed new life into a key part of the Chelsea conservation area while being sympathetic to existing heritage styles in the neighbourhood. In addition to preserving the architectural heritage of the area, this redevelopment also introduces new housing for modern residents.
