• 1607. The first recorded frost fair on the River Thames. There were football pitches, bowling matches, fruit sellers, shoemakers, barbers... and even a pub or two.
• 1760. Blackfriars Bridge opens, the first bridge across the Thames at this location was completed to pioneering designs by Robert Mylne, the Edinburgh-born engineer and architect.
• 1860. The London, Chatham and Dover Railway Company contracted Joseph Cubitt and others in 1860 to design and build a new railway station to connect southern counties with the City of London – Blackfriars Bridge – which opened in 1864.
• 1891. The Bankside Power Station supplied electricity from 1891 to 1981. Originally a coal-fired power station until a new more efficient and less polluting oil-fired plant was built between 1947 and 1963.
• 2020. Construction is underway to restore and connect the lost intersection between the South Bank and Bankside for the first time in 150 years.
• 1864. The brick arches that stood underneath the tracks were all that remained after Blackfriars Bridge and Goods Depot was demolished in 1864. The arches were closed off and deralict from this date.
• 2024. The 14 grand arches will be transformed as part of the regeneration of the River Thames South Bank. And will be home to a carfeully curated set of independent restaurants, bars and retail.

SUSTAINABILITY

The UK’s first fossil fuel-free major-mixed use development. Using energy-efficient technology on an unprecedented scale, setting a new benchmark for sustainability.

All eight buildings across Bankside Yards will be powered by electricity derived from renewable resources, producing zero emissions in operation.

Use of a low-temperature, 5th generation energy network across the 5.5 acres of Bankside Yards and the 5 different building use types, will create unprecedented energy sharing benefits. These benefits will subsequently provide energy efficiencies and significant savings.

Efficient systems

Technologies including air source heat pumps and optimised facades, as well as state-of-the-art ventilation and heat recovery systems, will enhance the scheme's sustainability credentials, helping make it net zero carbon in operation.

An electric underground logistics network will minimise disruption, congestion and truck movements throughout the development.

The result will allow more space for amenities, public realm and biodiversity, including 150 trees across 20 species planted around the site. This will support the Mayor's commitment to a 10% increase in London's tree canopy cover by 2050.
